[Food Review] Catch 'n Bite

Years ago when i was in Los Angeles, i remembered having one of the freshest and unforgettable fish and chips from a takeaway kiosk along the beach. Have been yearning for fresh fish and chips like that in Singapore but none of those i tried could match up to that standard.

Recently, i was invited by Catch 'n Bite to a food tasting session and I was truly elated as i finally found seafood which was similar and of comparable standards to the ones i had in LA so many years ago! And very affordable too.

Catch 'n Bite is a kiosk located in Westgate, Jurong. It is opened by the same folks running "SureCatch World", a fishing company in Singapore and that explains why their seafood is so fresh and their seafood are all made from real lobsters, crabs, prawns, fish and calamari, everything is non processed and REAL.

Muslims can also enjoy fresh seafood here as they are Halal Certified.

Seafood Tapas available at $1.90 each. Lots of variety to choose from like the Mango Chutnet Shrimp, Egg with ebiko (my personal favourite), salmon specially imported from Norway.

Clam soup at $4.90.
This bowl of warm clam soup is made from real lobster broth and generously served with lots of clams and veggies inside. Flavourful and comforting.

Ultimate Crab Sandwich at $7.90.
Luxurious crab meat served with fresh vegetables on a toasted ciabatta bun. Crab meat was generously served with a tinge of sweetness.

Softshell Crab Bento Set at $8.90
Softshell crab was crispy outside and juicy inside, batter is fragrant.

Crispy Fish at $3.90 with home made special sauce.
Fish bites seasoned with Creole spices. This was my absolute favourite! Very impressed with how fresh the fish was. Dip with their special sauce to enhance the taste.

[Food Review] Charcoal Thai

 DINNER AT CHARCOAL THAI
i am a big fan of Thai food as they are mostly bursting with rich flavours.

Mookata, The Thai-style dish - a dome-shaped grill with a soup trough that is placed over charcoal embers - is fast gaining popularity in the hotpot scene, sometimes we also call it 'Thai Hot pot'.

Now, there is a newly established Mookata restaurant in Kovan, great news for people living around that neighbourhood.

The place is spacious and nicely furnished with huge yellow lightings and air filters which doesn't make it smokey at all. Most importantly, it was very clean.

Thai iced tea- the perfect complement to a hot day!

The above is our BBQ and steamboat set that comes with a generous serving of marinated pork and chicken slices, fresh sotong, prawns, sausages, crab meat and a basket of veggies.

Usually most mookata restaurants i visited only offer one type of soup base for their hot pot but Charcoal Thai offers 2 kinds of soup base, the vegetable soup and tomyum soup. We were recommended the tomyum soup and it was really good, not too spicy and i guess thats what makes it more suitable as a soup base, i cannot stop taking sips of the soup.

The pork lard provided in the set are not meant to be eaten, they are meant to be put around the 'dome' so as to provide oil and moisture for the food to be BBQ-ed.

Traditional Thai Papaya Salad also known as Som Tum in Thai. Something i would always order whenever i visit Thailand.

One of Charcoal Thai's specialty and something not to be missed. Special Thai Prawn Cake served with tasty Thai sweet sauce. The batter and prawns were so crunchy and generously filled. I would definitely order this again when i visit this place.

Tom yum fried rice. The taste structure is similar to Thai Tom Yum soup: spicy, savory, rich, and a little tartness from the squirts of lime juice.

Fresh Kang Kong stir fried to an aromatic bliss with fiery sambal! I can hardly go through any meals without veggies and this crunchy dish is packed with flavours!

The sweetest way to end the meal: Mango Sticky Rice. Charcoal Thai's rendition of this dish is great, The rice is really sticky and moist. Coconut milk was good and mangoes were sweet.

[Food Review] Tenkaichi Wagyu Beef BBQ Buffet

I remember they were called Daidomon quite some time ago and were located outside the bulding, now they shifted inside and changed name to Tankaichi.

Drinks station had quite a variety of drinks and also hot green tea apart from the cold drinks.

This station was more for the shabu shabu which they also serve at another section of the restaurant

This plate was taken from the cooked food section, chawanmushi was good.

The selection was huge!

I highly recommend the Wagyu Yukke (Marinated raw beef), white tuna sashimi (i super love this after grilling it lightly for about 10 seconds each side, it melts in the mouth), Wagyu Karubi, Wagyu Rosu, Nakaochi Karubi, Bone in short rib and ox tongue.

Will definitely be back for the wagyu and the white tuna!!

[Food Review] Wan He Lou (萬合樓)

Thinking of where to dine on Mother's Day. Wan He Lou might be a very good choice if you are looking for Chinese cuisines. Centrally located at Jalan Besar (Maude Road), they serve a variety of delectable, yet affordable Chinese dishes.

We came slightly earlier for dinner on a weekend to avoid the crowd. Interior was decorated with oriental style lanterns and photographs and pictures, giving it a modern but yet cosy ambience.

Round tables signify 'reunion' in Chinese dining tradition making this a good place for gatherings and reunions.

A private VIP area is available at a corner of this restaurant.

Once seated, we were served with 2 glasses of Fresh Vegetable Juice, 新鲜蔬菜汁, $3. A nutricious concoction of pineapple, cai xin and sour plum. This tastes sweet and refreshing and has plenty of health benefits. A very good way to stir the appetite before the meal.

The Lobster Porridge 招牌龙虾粥, $29.90 for 2 pax is Wan He Lou's signature dish and this is definitely a MUST-TRY over here. Not many places that i know of have this dish and we were very pleased with how delicious this tastes.

This is a teochew style porridge served in excellent soup stock and is extremely robust and sweet in flavour (really feel like asking the chef for their secret recipe to this, LOL)

Lobster is fresh, firm and juicy, simply can't get enough of this. I'm salivating and my stomach is growling while typing this.

Next in line came the GREEN DRAGON VEGGIE 双味青龙菜, $9.90. This is the third time i came across this veggie, once in Malaysia, another time in a restaurant in Singapore which has already closed down. I have been asking around for the original name of this veggie but nobody has given me the answer yet. All i know is that it is from Cameron Highlands and its a hybrid between 2 different types of chives. I love how crunchy and naturally sweet this tastes, stir fried with anchovies and doesn't taste like chives at all.

Crispy Lotus with Salted Egg(咸蛋脆莲藕, $11.90). Another of their specialty, once you start, you cannot stop. This is like potato chips, thinly sliced, crispy and coated with the majestic flavours of salted egg yolk. Highly addictive!! Very highly recommended!

Last but not least came the pan fried Kurobuta Pork. This was absolutely succulent and tender, camelralized and lightly charred to create that perfect delectable sensation.

Kurobuta Pork is the most highly prized pork in Japan and comes from the ancient breed of pig known as Black Berkshire. The meat from the pure oriental strains of Black Berkshire, found in Japan, is regarded as the highest quality pork in the world.

I will definitely come back here as they have many more dishes which look and sound so appetizing! I wanna try all of them!
