[Food Review] Fart Tartz Cafe

Fart Tartz Cafe has a very cute and unforgettable name, in Cantonese, it actually means 'Prosperity'. Located at the Singapore expo, Fart Tartz is a little concept cafe (not enclosed) whimsically decorated with mini flower pots and grass patches to create a laid back, cozy ambience.

This is a cafe specializing in no bake tarts and cakes served in jars. Even their savouries such as salads and pastas are bottled rather than plated! It sure makes for great photos on Instagram.

Looking at the flowers alone already made me very happy to be sitting there having a meal. The bright lights shining through from the windows makes this place very vibrant too.

Minty Fruity ($4.80) Fruits infused H20. Healthy drink and nice presentation! The fruits gave a subtle flavour to the water and it's a healthy way to get H20 into your system if you're not someone who always drinks water like me.

Fusion Greens
Cherry tomatoes, sweet corn, sunflower seeds, mixture of imported greens such as rockets, spinach.
Sauce - Fusion of Wasabi & Yuzu Sauce. I like the idea and ease of having salad in a large jar where I can just pour in the sauce, close the lid tight and SHAKE VIGOROUSLY to get everything well mixed! Love how refreshing the sauce was and how crunchy and fresh the veggies were :)

Grilled Hot Wings ($8.50) Six pieces of yummy-licious mid joints grilled to perfection, tender and juicy with well balanced flavours.

Our drinks and starters!

Pepper Chix Linguine ($10.90) Linguine pasta, sauteed chicken cubes, fresh garlic, bell peppers, onions, black pepper & authentic spicy black pepper sauce. Chicken was very tasty with the strong flavours from the black pepper. Great for people who don't like cream based or tomato based pasta.

Chilled Prawn Angel Hair ($11.90) This is another innovative creation by the lovely owner of this cafe. Pasta is meant to be eaten chilled and seafood (prawns and scallop) are really fresh and succulent. Those who like cold noodles would probably love this :)

Fusion Olio ($11.90) Penne pasta, sauteed mushrooms; Swiss white, Cremini, Shiitake, Shimeji & Buna Shimeji, fresh garlic, crushed red peper & herbs topped with crispy oriental chicken crumbles. I love how simple and not too overwhelming the pasta tasted. I am a HUGE fan of aglio olio by the way and this was really a nice twist to the traditional ones served at other places. the addition of the crispy chicken crumbles added extra sweetness and oomph to this dish.

Pasta galore!

Bulbous Oriental Spaghetti ($12.90) Thin spaghetti, tossed with our in-house olive oil alliaceous mixed, smoked duck, crunchy fish roe, parsley & sea salt garlic powder. This was my absolute FAVOURITE among all the pastas! It was immensely tasty and addictive that I finished almost everything. The crunchy fish roe playfully bursts in my mouth upon every bite and this is one of the latest items to their menu.

Fart Tartz highlight is their non-bake pastries and this include the above 'dirt cake' or mud tart.  Served in a palm-sized flower pot, the dessert usually consists of cream cheese,  topped with "dirt" made of crushed Oreo cookies. Sprigs of artificial flowers adorn the cake. The cafe offers 10 flavours of mud tarts, with ingredients such as Snickers chocolate bar and Nutella.

Who can resist this display of all the goodies calling out to you? Non-bake tarts served in lovely, adorable little jars! I'm actually not a big fan of sweet stuff but these were not overly sweet and I actuallly liked them!

Thank you Fart Tartz for the awesome spread. We were definitely not disappointed and the owner has such a natural flair for culinary that you will be guaranteed a gastronomic adventure here :)

[Food Review] CNY Prosperity Peking Duck 4 pax menu at Nanxiang Steamed Bun Restaurant!

To welcome the year of the goat, Nanxiang Steamed Bun Restaurant has specially prepared a Prosperity Peking Duck Menu for 4 pax consisting of a tantalizing 8 courses guaranteed to entice the tastebuds of you and your family members :) Price is reasonable at $168++

This restaurant in Parco Bugis Junction mall is a franchise of Shanghai’s most famous xiao long bao restaurant.

1) Prosperity Salmon Fish Yu Sheng 三文鱼鱼生撈起Yú shēng (鱼生) is served as an appetizer to bring good luck for the new year and is usually eaten on the seventh day of the Chinese New Year. These days, we have Yu Sheng any time near and during CNY. Ingredients of Yú shēng include: thinly sliced fresh raw salmon, shredded white radish, shredded carrots, red pepper (capsicum), ginger, lime tree leaves, Chinese parsley, ground peanuts, toasted sesame seeds, Chinese shrimp crackers and five-spices powder. The dressing is made primarily from plum sauce.

2) Peking Duck Skin wrapped in Egg Crepe 北京片皮鸭. Gracefully assembled and served with much ado by having this dish is truly an ennobled experience. Dip it in the sweet sauce that comes with it.

3) Nanxiang Dumpling Chicken Sharkfins' Soup 馄饨鸡炖翅汤 . I totally enjoyed this. Soup was made of superior chicken broth, light yet flavourful with generous chunks of sharksfin which added texture to the entire dish.

4) Sauteed Mushrooms with Broccoli 冬菇扒西兰花. Fresh sea cucumber and conpoys were also served together with this dish.

5) Baby Lobster with Minced Garlic Fresh lobsters cooked to perfection, succulent and tasty, garnished with lots of coriander and onions.

6) Prosperity Golden Fried Rice 遍地黄金炒饭. This is also one of their signature dishes in the restaurant. I loved how sweet this tasted due to the pork flosses that topped it.

7) Sauteed Duck Leg Meat in BBQ Sauce. This was my favourite among all the dishes. I actually brought more friends to this place a week after trying out their CNY menu and all of them agreed that this dish is very tasty and very well executed. The BBQ sauce simply compliments the duck meat extremely well.

8) Double Boiled White Fungus 太后甜品. Supposedly good for ladies as it aids in better complexion.

Conveniently located at Bugis Junction, it is a great venue for gathering with friends and colleagues during the CNY festive period. For reservation, please call 68357577.

Also, I would very much like to recommend their XL Xiao Long Bao aka Soup Dumplings which is not part of the CNY menu. I was actually already very full from all the food but I can't help but to order this as I am really fascinated by it. Just look at how gigantic it is!!!

Nanxiang is the one and only restaurant in Singapore serving this giant sized soup dumplings which you get to slurp in a straw. Be careful as the soup within may still be very hot. Recently, improvisations has been made to the soup and it is now much tastier than before!!! It is definitely a MUST TRY and I have personally witnessed hordes of people queueing up for this at Nanxiang in Shanghai.

A meal is always better with warm, hospitable and happy people.

[Food Review] Flavour Flings

Flavour Flings is a newly established cafe and bistro located in Hougang, one of the owners of Flavour Flings is a Muslim and food here is all halal. My impression of this place is fantastic and definitely unforgettable because they have proved themselves to be awesomely different!

Recycled-wood furnishings give this place a laid-back vibe, perfect for casual brunch affairs. This place can comfortably host 30 pax at a time. I was so attracted to the wooden flooring with pebbles when I stepped in. It exudes a warm, rustic and modern atmosphere.

Cemented walls had textural designs, and the plain walls were made alive with hand drawn paintings creating a very refreshing and welcoming ambience.

Iced Chocolate ($6.50) Huge portion of rich dark cocoa powder goodness to satisfy even the most rabid chocolate lover, the drink was of the right richness and with just the right touch of sweetness.

They also have a selection of premium tea to add to their beverage menu.
Home made Truffle Fries served in a compact metal tin. Truffle oil as well as truffle salt (which is quite rarely used in most cafes) are used for this. They also have other selections of fries like the Ice-Cream fries and Nacho Cheese fries which I am definitely going back to try soon (because I am a huge fan of fries).

Eggs Jupiter ($17) Served with brioche, poached eggs, momotaro tomatoes, avocado, melted gruyere, nacho cheese baked potatoes and chicken sausages.

What makes this stand out is the use of Brioche which has a rich and tender crumb due to the high egg and butter content and also, it tastes sweeter than most other pastries due to the occasional use of sugar. It truly complements the poached eggs very well and brings this dish to a whole new level.

Most importantly, instead of the usual Hollandaise sauce that other cafes serve, Flavour Flings top their poached eggs in Nacho Cheese! In my most honest opinion, I feel Nacho Cheese is wayyyyy better than Hollandaise because taste is more intense and I often feel 'jelat' after maybe the 5th mouthful of this but surprisingly, I finished the whole of this with Nacho cheese and I even thought of having more! You must really try this and you will know what i mean.

And lastly, even the tomatoes sandwiched between the egg and the cheese is premium and sweeter, juicier than normal tomatoes.

Look at how the egg is poached to perfection! Pardon the mess over here but my tummy was definitely having a great time. I really wished this came in a bigger portion but then again, awesome stuff comes in small portions so that you will be yearning for more and it's not always a good idea to have too much of anything (because more awesome stuff awaits, continue reading) :)

Carbonara ($15) Made with egg yolk, cream, turkey ham, mushrooms, Parmesan. Pasta was cooked till al dente and it was quite different from carbonaras i've had before. It was cheesy and yet tasty but not overly creamy and cloying, which is rather hard to attain. Another 2 thumbs up for this.

Last but not least comes The Awesome One ($11). Pancakes with salted caramel sauce and bananas. My stomach was already close to exploding after all the above dishes but I was strongly recommended to try this and I never regretted it! I was never a pancake person but this totally changed my views on pancakes!

I loved how light and fluffy the pancakes were. They were slightly crispy on the outside and so soft and fluffy on the inside which made me soooo happy savouring it. The pancakes absorbed that sweet-salty goodness that was in perfect ratio; not too sweet, but not too salty as well.

I left Flavour Flings a very very happy girl :)

Flavour Flings is definitely a place to visit if you love pancakes and eggs. Service is friendly and the folks are warm and hospitable. As I'm typing this, I'm already trying to fix a date to revisit this awesome cafe again :)

Tonight, I hope to dream of warm, fluffy pancakes!
