[Food Review] Old Boys Gallery

Amidst the rows of pubs at Kampong Bahru is Old Boys Gallery, previously an art gallery now with an additional element of bistro opened by three friends who wanted a place for people to chill out and enjoy over delectable food and wide variety of craft beers.

A special place where food meets art, paintings of vibrant colours by local artists filled the walls.

The opposite side of the bistro has empty beer bottles neatly displayed, you can see the different types of beer they carry here.

As you walk down the bistro, you can find this very interesting 'Love Lock Bridge' just before the exit. Customers can write their names on locks and attach their locks to the metal railings there!

My choice of beverage was the French Rose Tea which came in a lovely pot.

We started with their Trio Plate of dishes. Priced at $21 nett, customers could choose up to 3 different kinds of starters available on the menu.

Crispy Porky!! One of my favourite over here at OBG. Cackling, juicy roasted pork served with kecap manis! Kecap manis is sweet dark sauce which is very popularly used in Indonesian cuisine. It compliments this dish extremely well!!!

OBG Wings. These wings are quite special and not too common in Singapore yet. They are marinated with Marmite and exudes a slightly sweet, yet robust and savoury flavour. Something definitely worth trying.

OBG Crab Cakes. Fresh crabs and mango relish makes such a perfect combination!

Vongole Aglio Olio. Venus clams sauteed in white wine sauce. I have a thing for pastas, especially aglio olios and I've learnt that although they are made from the simplest ingredients, it's not easy to execute them well. Here, OGB's rendition of Vongole left me very impressed and craving for more. Love it's unpretentious, honest to goodness taste!

Lastly, we finished off with Manster Burger! Topped with a thick beef patty, fried egg, with sweet caramelized onions, cheese, pickles and a special BBQ sauce served along with fries and vegetable, this would surely fill your stomachs leaving you very happy! Well, it's difficult to go wrong with burgers!

[Food Review] Xin Hao Ramen

Xin Hao Ramen opened its doors at Bugis Cube recently and it serves ramen with a local twist. Expect a decent bowl of hot, piping ramen without the normal Japanese bamboo shoots and chashu.

Ordering method is rather unique (in fact, I think I've used this ordering method in Japan before). Firstly, choose the type of ramen you want to have (salted, miso, shoyu, spicy) and bring the respective tag to the counter to order. Add ons of grilled meat, hanjuku egg, noodles and fried enoki are also available.

Simple and fuss free ordering instructions.

Place is small and neat. A good place for a fast lunch.

Ordered the Shoyu ramen. I have a fetish for shoyu ramen ever since I tasted incredibly yummy ones in Hokkaido many years back and have been in search of a bowl of good shoyu ramen in Singapore ever since.

Broth is not oily and flavourful enough for my liking, though it lacked of some oomph. However, it is still pretty decent and if i'm nearby and craving for ramen, I would come back here again. Fried enoki, hanjuku eggs and grilled meat came along with the ramen.

Also tried the spicy ramen. Definitely spicy which added an extra kick to the flavours.

The lean grilled meat is what makes the ramen different from others. This meat is marinated and grilled chinese style, chewy and yummy!

And i must definitely comment that their hanjuku egg was cooked to such perfection that the yolk was silky and creamy, I'm not a fan of egg yolk but i finished this!

Very soon, we emptied our bowls and left with very satisfied stomachs.

[Recipes] Curry Chicken using Toast Box Ready-to-cook Paste

In Celebration of Singapore’s 50th Birthday #SG50, Toast Box launches its new product offering Asian Delight Ready-to-Cook Pastes featuring Curry Chicken, Laksa, Mee Siam and Mee Rebus.

These pastes come in so handy for a fuss free, quick meal! Step by step instructions can be found at the back of the packets, making it very user friendly and suitable even for beginner cooks! And the good thing I really like about this pack is that one box consists of 4 different kinds of paste and this enables me to whip up a variety of meals!

The Ready-to-Cook pastes are retailing for S$6.50 per pack except Mee Rebus which is priced at S$6.80.

I decided on the curry chicken as I happened to have a craving for this and curry chicken has always been my all time favourite dish.

Basically, the above are the ingredients I used for this whole dish.

According to the instructions, I marinated the chicken with the curry paste for around 30 minutes to an hour.

Added some oil into the hot wok, cut the potatoes and pan fried them for a while till golden brown.

Added the lemon grass, the chicken and Kara coconut milk. (I used Kara brand because I think it is more fragrant than many other brands)

Added some water and mixed everything under medium heat. Simmer for around 20 minutes or until chicken is soft and tender.

Here's my bowl of Chicken Curry!!!

My verdict: Coming from the bottom of my heart, this chicken curry is really delicious and very tasty! It is also spicy enough for my liking. I can take and love spicy food, so this is really good for me. I have also tried other curry pastes before and I can now say that this is really one of the best I've come across and I recommend this to everyone who wants to cook this dish!!! This bowl of curry was emptied and finished to the very last drop, that's how AWESOME it is =))))

Here's my detailed recipe for those who are interested.

INGREDIENTS: (Serves 2)
- 3 chicken drums, 1 chicken thigh (or around 450g chicken)
- 2 potatoes
- 2 stalks of lemongrass (chopped and bruised)
- 1 packet of Toast Box Curry Paste
- 150ml Kara Coconut Milk
- 200ml water

METHOD:
- Marinate chicken with curry paste for around 30 mins to an hour
- In a hot wok, add some oil and pan fry potatoes till golden brown.
- Add in the chicken, lemongrass, coconut milk and water.
- Stir and mix everything well under medium heat.
- Simmer for around 20 minutes or until chicken is soft and tender.
