Toyota Corolla Altis Elegance Review
Built upon the stellar reputation of the Toyota Corolla’s iconic badge, the all-new 2014 Toyota Corolla Altis represents a triumphant showcase of Toyota’s philosophy of constant improvement. This year, the series’ 11th generation fuses stylish design with durability and reliability, to redefine the legend that is the Toyota Corolla Altis.
The Toyota Corolla Altis is after all, the world's best selling car, with almost 40 million units sold since its inception.
With a longer wheelbase and shorter overhangs, the car holds an athletic stance with greater presence. More pronounced flared wheel arches and a clean yet impactful sculpted surface adds an air of elegance to its sporty exterior. Viewed in profile, a sweeping crease in the body sheet metal spans the length of the sedan and accentuates the integrated door handle design.
The changes at the rear are slightly more obvious - there are new tail lamps that accentuate the width of the Altis while new alloy wheels complete the exterior makeover. Despite its conservative stance, the Altis is well-proportioned thanks to the right amount of rear overhang - the JDM Axio suffers from a heavy rear because of its longer rear overhang.
In terms of dynamics, the Altis is reasonably capable in all departments. The running gear is similar as before other than a recalibrated electric power steering system, which makes the new car's helm feel a tad meatier and a bit more direct. Besides the steering, the Altis handles and rides very much like its predecessor - safe and a little short of inspiration while offering a comfortable and supple enough ride at all speeds.
Sitting behind the Altis' new nose is a new ZR series 1598cc four-cylinder motor endowed with Toyota's Dual VVT-I system to boost power as well as efficiency.
The outgoing Altis' 1.6 unit makes 107bhp but the new engine betters this by 15bhp, making a total of 122bhp at 6000rpm. Peak torque has risen to 154Nm at 5200rpm, up from the previous motor's 145Nm at 4500rpm. It delivers the required goods when worked hard and stays relatively refined as well. Outright performance is reasonable for a family car f this size - the 0-100km/h sprint is dispatched in 11.8 seconds.
A horizontally oriented dash structure enhances the interior with a sense of spaciousness while providing a more intuitively functional space to interface with vehicular controls. The interior offers a premium aesthetic with its use of piano-black gloss trim highlighted by cyber carbon accents, while posh trimming conveys an upscale yet sportier image. Ornamental stitching along the edge of the dash pad adds the intricacy of craftsmanship to the interior’s upscale nature.
As a result of the increase in vehicle wheelbase, passenger comfort in the all-new Corolla Altis’ interior package has been dramatically improved, with significantly increased legroom for rear seat occupants.
The centre console features neat looking air-con controls and a touch screen DVD stereo head unit that plays multi format discs. The screen also displays images from the new reversing camera. As previously, the driving position is highly adjustable and comfortable thanks to a reach and rake adjustable steering wheel as well as height adjustments for the seat.
Storage spaces are plenty in the Altis - there are big door bins, compartments under the front armrest, cup holders and twin glove boxes on the dash. The boot is also well shaped and voluminous - it can accommodate up to four golf bags. Moreover, the rear seats also split/fold for an even larger load area if required.
The Altis' standard equipment list is reasonably long even in the base 1.6 model. It comes with twin airbags, ABS with EBD, Brake Assist, touch screen DVD stereo with controls on the steering wheel, alarm and immobilizer and so on. As with every Toyota model from Borneo Motors, the new Altis comes with a five-year unlimited mileage warranty for total peace of mind.
The Altis' mid-life facelift is a subtle and mild one to say the least. The look inside and out might somewhat be similar as before but the new engine that offers benefits in both performance and fuel efficiency should further improve the Altis' chances in the competitive Cat A family saloon sector.
In terms of driving experience on the road, the all-new Corolla Altis’ 1.6-litre, four-cylinder 16 Valves DOHC engine equipped with Dual VVT-i is very responsive, quiet, and smooth. The gear transmission is barely audible and the braking grip is tight; allowing for sufficient reaction time in the event of an emergency.
