[Food Review] Wan He Lou (萬合樓)

Thinking of where to dine on Mother's Day. Wan He Lou might be a very good choice if you are looking for Chinese cuisines. Centrally located at Jalan Besar (Maude Road), they serve a variety of delectable, yet affordable Chinese dishes.

We came slightly earlier for dinner on a weekend to avoid the crowd. Interior was decorated with oriental style lanterns and photographs and pictures, giving it a modern but yet cosy ambience.

Round tables signify 'reunion' in Chinese dining tradition making this a good place for gatherings and reunions.

A private VIP area is available at a corner of this restaurant.

Once seated, we were served with 2 glasses of Fresh Vegetable Juice, 新鲜蔬菜汁, $3. A nutricious concoction of pineapple, cai xin and sour plum. This tastes sweet and refreshing and has plenty of health benefits. A very good way to stir the appetite before the meal.

The Lobster Porridge 招牌龙虾粥, $29.90 for 2 pax is Wan He Lou's signature dish and this is definitely a MUST-TRY over here. Not many places that i know of have this dish and we were very pleased with how delicious this tastes.

This is a teochew style porridge served in excellent soup stock and is extremely robust and sweet in flavour (really feel like asking the chef for their secret recipe to this, LOL)

Lobster is fresh, firm and juicy, simply can't get enough of this. I'm salivating and my stomach is growling while typing this.

Next in line came the GREEN DRAGON VEGGIE 双味青龙菜, $9.90. This is the third time i came across this veggie, once in Malaysia, another time in a restaurant in Singapore which has already closed down. I have been asking around for the original name of this veggie but nobody has given me the answer yet. All i know is that it is from Cameron Highlands and its a hybrid between 2 different types of chives. I love how crunchy and naturally sweet this tastes, stir fried with anchovies and doesn't taste like chives at all.

Crispy Lotus with Salted Egg(咸蛋脆莲藕, $11.90). Another of their specialty, once you start, you cannot stop. This is like potato chips, thinly sliced, crispy and coated with the majestic flavours of salted egg yolk. Highly addictive!! Very highly recommended!

Last but not least came the pan fried Kurobuta Pork. This was absolutely succulent and tender, camelralized and lightly charred to create that perfect delectable sensation.

Kurobuta Pork is the most highly prized pork in Japan and comes from the ancient breed of pig known as Black Berkshire. The meat from the pure oriental strains of Black Berkshire, found in Japan, is regarded as the highest quality pork in the world.

I will definitely come back here as they have many more dishes which look and sound so appetizing! I wanna try all of them!
