Nefertiti Restaurant & Cafe

Nefertiti is an authentic Mediterranean restaurant serving a the finest authentic Egyptian and International cuisine which is established in the charming district of Arab Street.

This restaurant is named after the Queen of Ancient Egypt and helmed by an Executive Chef, Amr Elgohary who's experience in culinary art for more than 10 years and has travelled the world to hone his skills.

Authentic Egyptian fare can be found here if you are feeling adventurous and want to try something other than the common fare found in Singapore.

The restaurant had 2 entrances. One was along Arab street and the other was along Haji Lane. Decorated with Egyptian paintings and rugs, I felt like I was magically teleported to an ancient Egyptian town once i stepped in.

We were presented Nefertiti Mixed Mezza Platter ($19.50). Beautifully presented on a long plate, this mixed platter is a perfect for us to sample some of the food here. Consisting of Vine leaves (stuffed with seasoned rice), Mirza Gasemi (eggplant with tomatoes, garlic and spices), Hummus (mashed chickpeas blended with tahini), Hummus Bngar (Hummus with beetroot), Falafel (deep fried chickpeas, onions, garlic), Fattoush (salad with garlic, fresh mint & lemon juice).

My personal favourite was the Hummus and Fattoush which I found very appetizing. All of the above went very well with the generous serving of Pita Bread that came with it.

Next came our main dish which was Mixed Grill Platter ($33). Consisting of lamb chops, Kofta lamb, Shish Taouk (chicken) and Shish Kebab (Beef),

The lamb chops were perfect and very well marinated! Rice that came along was very fragrant too. This whole platter is simply perfect for meat lovers!

Last but not least came our dessert Kunafa, Levantine cheese pastry soaked in sweet sugar based syrup. This was my first time trying it and it was LOVE AT FIRST BITE!! Topped with a dollop of whipped cream, it was somewhat crispy but sweet but not too overwhelming. It's definitely a MUST TRY if you have a sweet tooth.

Besides serving Egyptian food, they also have the standard Western food like pizzas and pastas on their extensive menu in case you wanna try out something else.

Thank you for hosting us with such great hospitality :)

Doggie Food Tasting Session for Oven Baked Tradition

A couple of weeks ago, Water, my pet dog, if you haven't already read about him, attended a FOOD  TASTING EVENT! He's such a lucky chap, I didn't get to eat anything except for finger food during that event and he gets all the good and sumptious food to eat. :p

This event is held at Paw Pet-Radise, a cafe created by pet lovers for dogs, in conjunction with Eagle Territorial Agency, a global company distrubuting nutritious pet food and accessories and Clubpets, Singapore's longest running pet magazine.

The entrance of Paw Pet-radise looks like this, simple and cosy but vibrant in colours.

Comfy armchairs and tables were neatly placed at the side of the cafe and pets had ample space to roam around in the middle of the place.

Water is mingling with the other friendly furbies! I am still amazed that dogs communicate by sniffing one another. I wonder how much understanding they can get from this gesture!

Right in front of the cafe is the food for our Water's tasting event that day! They look SO APPETIZING and I could have salivated if I stood there another minute longer.

A closer look at the food. Above are Pumpkin Curry which is made of Oven Baked Tradition Adult Lamb and mainly vegetables. The other dish beside it is Egg Casserole consisting of Oven Baked Tradition Adult Fish, dory fish, egg, capsicum, carrots and pets milk. This looks very much like a slice of yummy mouth-watering pizza!

That's not all. Burgers and Fries made up of Oven Baked Tradition Grain Free Chicken was next. Just look at it, it really resembles our fast food hamburgers! Fillet and Summer Veg were next to it and as the name implies, it consists of Oven Baked Tradition Fish.

Last but not least they even had desserts for our pets!!! Breakfast Parfait which contains Oven Baked Tradition SENIOR (for older dogs), salmon, yoghurt and some other ingredients. They mentioned that our pets may not get used to this as it's sourish in flavour.

We were officially introduced to Oven Baked Tradition by the professional people of ETA. Let me share with you more of what I was taught that day.

Oven-Baked Tradition dog food was formulated after the intensive study of how dogs live and digest food, keeping their nutritional well-being  in mind so as to provide them a diet as close as possible to a NATURAL DIET because they strongly believe that NATURAL is the way it should be.

The oven baked process has several benefits. It takes ten times longer to slow bake food compared to the fast method of extrusion manufacturing. Slow baking allows nutrients to be easily digested while protecting the integrity by enhancing the aroma and taste. It also allows more fresh meat in their recipes resulting in a delicious and easy to consume diet. The extrusion cooking procedure is a process that uses high temperatures and high pressure. This affects the vitamins that are sensitive to high temperatures.

Oven baked tradition has formulas that contain none of the following ingredients: bovine products, animal by-products, artificial flavors or coloring agents, ethoxyquin ( EQ), BHA / BHT, corn, wheat, soy proteins or trans fats. Oven-Baked TraditionTM is very dense compared to other pet foods on the market. This will result in feeding less and offering you a better value . Omega 3 & 6 are present in all  Oven-Baked TraditionTM formulas. All the grains are ground in production facility minutes before baking. This allows total control over the product made and to guarantee the freshness and the quality of the nutrients.

I took an Egg Casserole for Water to try and to my surprise, he gobbled it all up in less than a minute!!!

He was so excited that everything spilled on the floor but I guess it must be very DELICIOUS!!!

After that, he kept sipping water, he really lives up to his name, he drinks LOTS of water! I also placed some dessert beside him in case he is still hungry, he took a few mouthfuls of it and stopped after a while, I guess the egg casserole has filled him up!

With my fellow blogger friend who's cute dog which I believe love the food very much as well.

Other cute and excited furbies!

Water feeling so full and happy!

Thank you Paw Pet-radise, ETA and Clubpets for this awesome event! Learnt some very useful information that day, very fruitful indeed.

I was definitely interested in allowing Water to try out this new Oven Baked Tradition Dog Food after learning about all its benefits and advantages to animals.

I chose the Oven Baked Tradition Fish because Water used to have very sensitive and bad skin which has improved tremendously now. The vet last time told us that he should not eat chicken and fish is the most compatible food for his diet.

I have started feeding Water 2 days ago because he just finished his old food. He is now in the process of getting used to his new diet and I will update again in a few weeks time to update you guys on how he's getting on with the new feedings!

[Food Review] Sankai Japanese Restaurant

Sankai Japanese Restaurant is centrally located directly opposite Bugis Junction along Liang Seah Street.

Here, you can find decent Japanese food at very cheap prices during dinner time where they have their SUPER HOT DEAL promotion with discount up to 70% OFF!! (All prices stated in this post below are the discounted prices during dinner as of October 2014, unless otherwise stated)

Their dining area is divided into 2 sections. Upon entering, you will see the sushi bar counter in front of you and this leads to another room with more dining seats available inside.

A small private dining area is located right inside the restaurant. Good for a cozy gathering with friends and family.

Ordered my favourite Salmon Belly ($1.80/pc), Salmon ($1.20/pc), Salmon Roe ($4.50) and Swordfish ($2/pc) sashimi. They were all fresh and the juicy salmon roe playfully bursts in the mouth!

The Grilled Scallop with Spicy Cod Roe ($7.80). Succulent scallop baked with creamy, gooey cheese served piping hot, this was my absolute favourite dish of the night and it is definitely value for money.

Mixed Skewers ($14.80) is good for sharing. Most of the meat was nicely marinated, other than this, it's pretty normal and nothing much to rave about.

Their beef hotpot set is valued below $20 and it brings a warm and fuzzy feeling to the stomach due to the hot, flavourful broth. Comes with an egg for dipping, a bowl of rice, soup and watermelon. We found the soup a tad too sweet for our liking, after consulting the lady boss on this, we found out that the sweetness of the soup is actually catered to their regular Japanese customers here who actually preferred it sweeter. So, here, you can actually get authentic Japanese hotpot meals!

Another of the best sellers here is the Salmon Crabmeat Aburi Roll ($9.80). This was pretty well executed and nicely seared.

They have a wide variety of traditional Japanese fare like tempura, chawanmushi, handrolls and sushi to choose from. Besides food, they also serve alcoholic drinks and they have beer promotion too!

And to end it all, we were served a scoop of sesame ice-cream with a spoonful of red bean paste at the side. and OMG, this was SUPER FANTASTIC!!!! I almost asked if they have a tub of this where i could buy and keep it at home. As i'm typing this, i'm thinking of how yummy this is, perhaps I should come back here again some time this week for this ice-cream! MUST-TRY!!!

Thank you to the very efficient lady boss, Candy for hosting the meal. Service was fast and prompt. If you're looking for Japanese food at a very reasonable value in a centralized location, don't forget Sankai Japanese Restaurant!

WATERCRESS PORK RIBS SOUP
Watercress is rich in fiber, anti-oxidants, vitamin C, beta-carotene, folate, potassium, calcium, phosphorous and iron, and is a good source of iodine as well.

It has Anti-inflammatory properties, Anti-oxidant and anti-cancer effects, Aphrodisiac effect, promotes strong and healthy bones, treats cough, aids the digestive system, good for nails, hair, eyes, teeth and skin, great for hangover and has a purifying effect.

Hence, this has become one of my favourite soup to cook! There are some variations to this and here's my version today:

RECIPE:

200g pork ribs (blanched)
4 red dates
2 honey dates

METHOD:
1. Blanch pork ribs in boiling water for a few minutes
2. Wash and rinse watercress till clean
3. Throw all ingredients into slow cooker, fill with water and cook. (I usually cook my soup on HIGH for the first 3 hours and change to LOW for the next few hours. If soup is not tasty enough, cook longer if you have the time)

SALTED DUCK VEGGIE SOUP

Had a whole leftover carcass of a roasted duck and decided not to waste the bones, thus decided on this soup.

This is a classic Peranakan delicacy known as Itek Tim or Kiam Chye Ar (Teochew), growing up in a Peranakan/Hokkien family, this is a soup we commonly have on the dining table and it is always bursting with flavours and goes very well with a bowl of steaming hot rice.

RECIPE:
INGREDIENTS:
Half carcass of roasted duck (bones)
Salted mustard greens
2 tomatoes (sliced into chunks)
2 salted plums
2 slices of ginger (thumb size)

Method:
1. Soak mustard greens in water for at least 30 minutes to remove the excess salt.
2. Throw all ingredients into slow cooker, fill with water and cook. (I usually cook my soup on HIGH for the first 3 hours and change to LOW for the next few hours. If soup is not tasty enough, cook longer if you have the time, it usually tastes better the longer you cook it)
4. Enjoy the bowl of hot soup :)

RED BEAN SOUP (AZUKI)

Beans are a healthy source of protein,  famous for their fiber content, and has the highest antioxidant rating of all food. It is also a remedy for common illnesses. This dessert soup is incredibly easy to make.

RECIPE:
INGREDIENTS: 200g red beans
Half piece of dried orange peel
2 cubes of rock sugar (or more if desired)

METHOD:
1. Wash and soak red beans in water for at least 2 hours or overnight.
2. Throw red beans into slow cooker and cook for about 4-6 hours,
3. When reached desired consistency (I like mine thicker, if you want it more watery, add some water), add in orange peel and rock sugar at the last half hour of cooking.
4. Can serve it hot or transfer to fridge for few hours to chill it first and have it cold. (It's sweeter when it's cold)

[Food Review] Islamic Restaurant

The Islamic Restaurant has a long history which dates way back to the 1920s. Opened for as long as 90 over years and spanning 4 generations, it still serves one of the BEST NASI BERYANIs in SINGAPORE which is also it's trademark here.

** Nasi is a Malay word for Rice but there are many ways to spell Biryani (briyani, biriani, buriyani, beryani or beriani). However, one thing in common is that biryani is a set of rice-based foods made with spices, rice (usually Basmati – very fragrant, long grained rice with light airy texture) and chicken, mutton, fish, eggs or vegetables. And the name is derived from the Persian word beryā(n) which means “fried” or “roasted”.

We reached here slightly before dinner and restaurant was fairly packed which is very good for a weekday! Decorated with  many pictures and antiques against walls of green, red and yellow, this restaurant is not your typical 'prata shop'. It feels to me like a high class coffee shop of style and substance!

Regular patrons of this famous restaurant include Singapore's First President, the late Encik Yusoff Ishak, President S.R Nathan, the former Chief Justice Wee Chong Jin and a throng of Parliament members, lawyers and doctors. If you're lucky, you may even catch state lomousines packing the glorious fare for royalties!

Stairway leading to the upper part of the restaurant.

Upstairs is an area catered for functions, birthday parties and large gatherings or when it's fully packed downstairs.

Here comes the famous Nasi Beryani (Chicken), $8. Curry is very aromatic and fragrant, this whole concoction has sourish and spicy flavours which is not overwhelming and every grain of rice is deliciously infused with rich and tantalizing flavours. Chicken is huge and very tender and tasty too. We truly agree that this is really one of the BEST NASI BERYANI we have tried so far. Besides chicken, they serve this with Mutton or Fish which are also very popular too.

Kashmiri Naan $2.50. Flat bread with dried fruits. Naan with a tinge of sweetness as it contains dried fruits. This is our first time trying Kashmiri naan and we were happy to have tried this as it's a refreshing change from the normal naans.

Lashuni Naan ($2.20), Naan topped with garlic. Goes very well when dipped with their different curries and gravies, it's also very good on its own too.

Mutton Goa ($8), succulent pieces of mutton with their rich and aromatic gravy!

Butter Chicken ($8), boneless chicken cooked with thick, creamy and divine butter gravy.

We really loved the food so much that we cleared the plates!

Last but not least, we ended the fantastic meal with Caramel Pudding ($4). The pudding was sticky and chewy drizzled with a generous splash of caramel syrup.

This is one restaurant which you must really try if you love curries, their quality will not disappoint for sure and be prepared for an unforgettable meal :)
