Chicken Up is a casual restaurant at Tanjong Pagar serving Korean Fried Chicken, soju and beer. We visited during dinner time on a weekday and was very surprised to find the restaurant bustling with people. The crowd was made up of people of all age groups and the queue was snaking. This made us all the more curious about what this restaurant had to offer.
We were visibly enticed by their Watermelon Soju ($38). Fresh and pure watermelon juice mixed with an additional bottle of soju is served in a huge watermelon rind. The sweetness of the watermelon juice totally masked the taste of soju. A very good beverage for people who doesn't like the taste of soju. But beware, you wouldn't even realize it by the time you get drunk. This is a very popular beverage among the customers here and we see a huge watermelon rind on almost every table.
Rose Soju ($35). The rose soju is meticulously pre-mixed in a sleek bottle and served on a longish dish with 2 heart-shaped shot glasses and a stalk of rose. Taste is sweet with a subtle hint of soju.
Pineapple Soju ($30). Another captivating appearance on our table. I loved this most among all the other soju cocktails. Pineapple had a strong, fruity and saccharine flavour which overpowers the alcohol taste of the soju. It feels just like drinking pure pineapple juice.
Chicken Up serves piping hot fried chicken in a variety of marinates. We tried Soya Chicken Wings ($24 /8pc, $12 /4pc).This was the first chicken dish that we had that day. The skin is fried to superb perfection and well seasoned, while the meat is super juicy and moist. SIMPLY AMAZING!!
Next were the Spicy Up ($34 /8pc, $18 /4pc). 4 big pieces of chicken lathered with the same marinates as their classic chicken with additional spice. Equally juicy, tender and moist with crispy skin! I personally liked this the best. In fact it was so juicy that the juice actually squirted out upon first bite.
Yangnyum Chicken ($38 /8pc, $22 /4pc) – Coated with a sweet and spicy sauce and also sesame for additional crunch. Very flavourful.
Truffle Fries ($8). French fries sprinkled in salt and truffle oil. The aroma of truffle filled the air once this was served. Fries were crispy and richly seasoned.
Corn Cheese ($8). Baked sweet corn in mayonnaise topped with mozarella cheese
and herbs. Gooey, rich and creamy, goes so well with beer. Saving grace was this is not 'je-lat' even after several mouthfuls.
And last but not least, the meal was nicely washed down with Apple Soju ($25), another one of their popular cocktail sojus.
We had a fantastic time tasting one of the BEST KFC (Korean Fried Chicken) here in Singapore. Chicken Up will be opening their 2nd outlet at Tampines in November!!! Be sure to check them out there too.
For the fried chicken aficionados, Chicken Up serves a very popular Fried Chicken Buffet, available at $25+ per pax. Order and eat all the fried chicken you can!
