[Food Review] Lai Huat Sambal Fish Restaurant

Some of you might have already heard of this restaurant which opened years ago.

However, this relatively new restaurant is opened by the nephew of Lai Huat Seafood Restaurant located at Horne Road. This is opened by chef/owner Patrick Lim and is located at Siglap. After years of apprenticeship from his grandfather and a burning desire and passion to pass down his grandfather's signature dishes, this latest Lai Huat establishment was opened.

"Lai Huat" was founded in 1951 by Mr Patrick Lim's grandfather who created the original sambal recipe topped over crispy pomfret.

This signature dish is worth a try if you haven't tried it before and it is often unforgettable for most and one would usually be coming back for more again and again. The special thing about this is that  the pomfret fish is double fried skillfully so as to attain the ultimate crispiness. It is extremely crispy that upon first bite, it feels almost like biting a piece of keropok. Flesh is surprisingly tender too. What surprised us even more is that though it has gone through a considerable long frying duration, the whole dish wasn't very oily which made it even more appetizing.

Another key aspect is the generous amount of sambal that tops the fish. Sambal is sooooo tasty and specially concocted with so many ingredients to give it that extreme fragrance that you can even eat it on its own. Even the bones of the fish can be eaten. This was definitely the highlight of the meal and almost every table has one of this.

Their Fish maw with crab meat soup $16(S), $25(M), $35(L) is also worth a try. Filled with lots of fish maw, mushrooms, crab meat and made without artificial seasonings. Not too starchy nor diluted, very satisfying. Price is very reasonable too.

Salted Egg Prawns ($20 onwards). Lai Huat's version of this is very impressive and this is also one of their signature dishes. Prawns were big and succulent and evenly coated with salted egg mix, so good that I ate up all the shells too.

Be sure to make a reservation before visiting as they can get very crowded sometimes.

Yet another good find in the east of Singapore.

Thank you Patrick for your hospitality and the awesome food, we will definitely be back :)

[Food Review] The Boiler SG

Owned by bankers-turned restaurateurs, “The Boiler” is a Southern American-inspired seafood joint that serves up fresh seafood in Louisiana style known as Seafood Boil. The restaurant, despite being located in an industrial area, was almost filled to the brim on a weekday evening and is surprisingly spacious and provides not only fresh communal style seafood but also a wide range of alcoholic beverages too.

Started off with some delicious appetizers. Clearly remembered the Southern Chicks and Waffles where a piece of tender chicken is placed on top of waffles held together by a toothpick.

Fish & Chips served with freshly cut potatoes. Dory fish was tender and batter was light and crispy.

The communal style of eating is with hands. Here, we have seafood served in a transparent bag and all we have to do was to throw the whole thing on the table wrapped in a clean pieceo of plastic and start digging in! Above is Live Boston Lobster.

There you have it, a whole, fully cooked lobster staring straight at you on the table. It comes in 3 different types of gravy and we chose the Garlic Butter gravy which was absolutely savoury and delightful. Lobster was fresh and succulent without a doubt.

Next to impress us was Boiler's Duo Bag, a seafood goodie bag consisting of prawns, mussels, clams, sausages, corn. The chili definitely made it's warm presence known. Everything was finger linkin' good. Most importantly, everything was really fresh.

A very unique dining experience with excellent food and service, All seafood lovers regardless of age are recommended to come here!

[Review] chin-fillers-botox-one-point-v-face 2

More than a month has passed after my first session at  Dr Tiffiny Yang Aesthetic & Surgery Clinic. In case you haven't read yet, I did One Point V Face treatment which consists of chin fillers and botox to achieve a slimmer, v-shaped look.

The chin fillers showed immediate effects and around 20-30% of it would subside after about a week. However, for botox to take effect, it takes approximately 1 month after injection. So here I am again updating the results of my treatment because botox have fully kicked in by now.

These are my most recent pics, the above 2 pics were taken just yesterday and the third pic was taken without any make up the day before. Taken with my iphone 4 (I feel the camera is lousy and I am so going to get a better phone with a better camera really really soon) But anyway, even though the camera is lousy, you can see from the pics that my face is visibly and obviously sharper than before. Chin fillers have subsided slightly since my first session but it's still obvious and sharp!!! Exactly how i wanted it to be :)

Forgot to mention that the pics were totally NOT EDITED or filtered.

Here's my before and after picture:

BEFORE TREATMENT

1 MONTH+ AFTER TREATMENT

Now that the pictures are put close together, you can see the difference right? My face was so fat and broad before the treatment. Now, it's slimmer with that cute chin!!! Once again, I must emphasize that I did not edit the pictures at all as I want to show the actual and true effects of this treatment.

I had Botox twice before and both times, I didn't get the expected results and I was disappointed. The first time I had it done at a clinic in Singapore, they were having a promotion and I wanted to try it, but it wasn't that cheap too, I remembered it costs about $700 after taxes. After 2 months, I saw no difference at all to the shape of my face and I went back to the clinic. The doctor gave me more botox injections. Another 2 months later, I saw NO DIFFERENCE again and I went back, they gave me more injections again. Finally, I still didn't see a difference but I didn't bother to go back anymore because I have already given up hope on their product. I felt that all my money was wasted.

The second time I had botox again was in Chiang Mai, I visited a clinic over there and got it done at about SGD$200+ which was cheap compared to getting it done in Singapore but of course don't follow my foot steps if you are not sure because there are more risks involved in getting it done overseas. The results were the same, no difference.

I almost gave up on the belief that Botox could really help reduce the jaw muscles and give you a slimmer face until I decided to give it one last shot at  Dr Tiffiny Yang Aesthetic & Surgery Clinic. Finally, Botox worked for me!!! My pictures above have painted a thousand words. I trust and believe in the quality of their products and their professionalism has won me over. Dr Tiffiny is really gentle and caring, you can see it when you speak to her during consultation, she works with sincerity and passion, not like some other doctors which i visited before.

It is so true that when you decide to go through all these invasive or even non-invasive surgeries, the doctors and clinics you visit must be reputable and credible, if you go to any Tom, Dick and Harry clinics like me in the past, it is highly likely that your money would go to waste. I was very lucky that other than having gotten my money wasted, nothing bad has happened to my face.

Of course not all clinics are bad, there are many good ones around and  Dr Tiffiny Yang Aesthetic & Surgery Clinic is definitely one place I can strongly recommend to everyone and anyone who is searching for a good clinic.

This is something I have learnt from my past experiences and hope it has taught you something too :)

[Food Review] Jin Long Seafood Restaurant 金隆海鲜菜馆

Jin Long Seafood Restaurant 金隆海鲜菜馆 has been established for decades in the cozy neighbourhood of Bedok. They started from a very humble stall in a coffeeshop and expanded their business into a full-fledged restaurant to provide a clean and comfortable air conditioned environment for their growing customers

I was introduced to this place earlier this year due to an invitation to a friend's birthday celebration. Was pretty impressed with their dishes and brought my family here few months later again.

Jin Long is now located under a HDB block facing the main road. With it's vibrant signage, it' s hard to miss it when you are at this area. There is a huge car park right at the block.

We were here on a weekday evening and the restaurant was about 80% full so be sure to make reservations before coming.

Following are some honest reviews of some of the dishes which my family and I recommend as we find these to be well executed and worth a mention in my blog.

Spring Onion and Ginger Mussels ($12). This was absolutely fragrant and I really liked the tantalizing aroma of this. Mussels were freshly cooked to perfection and this is one of Jin Long's signature dishes.

Crispy Brinjal with French Beans ($12.80). Unlike many other restaurants, Jin Long serves deep fried brinjals making them crispy on the outside and meltingly soft on the inside. A pretty unique way of cooking brinjals. My mum said they don't even taste a little bit like brinjals at all!

Assorted Pepper Steamed Cod Fish ($13.80/piece). Savoury gravy made up of garlic and green chili. All of us agreed strongly that this dish was really excellent. Fish is extremely fresh and tender. A must-order in my opinion. I've tried other fishes here before but this was the best!

Home made beancurd with Shimeiji and Deep Fried Golden Mushroom ($12.80). Toufu is freshly made from soy milk and egg. Melts in the mouth, just like eating deep fried chawanmushi. Topped with generous deep fried crispy mushrooms. This is also another must-order dish for us, to date, this is already our third time having this dish.

Scallop and Banana with Bak Gua Roll ($15) This is one innovative creation by Jin Long which I have not tried elsewhere before. Bak gua, banana, scallop and prawn all enveloped in this crunchy cocoon of freshly fried batter. The sweetness of the banana kind of takes over everything else, however, the smokey flavours of the bak gua can also be detected.

Th star dish of the night was Lobster Porridge (2 lobsters weighing about 1kg and cost about $98). The broth was HEAVENLY and SO ADDICTIVE that I cannot stop drinking it although I was already quite full by the time this dish arrived. The sweet sea flavours of the lobster left an umami boost which blended so well with the porridge.

Lobster meat was juicy and succulent.

Thank you for the impeccable service. We will definitely continue to patronize your restaurant, keep the good dishes coming up :)
